Ask for Help
I mentioned in #4 about avoiding blame. This not the same as not accepting responsibility when something does not turn out as expected and certainly not an excuse for doing nothing!
Responsibility and accountability are the flip side of autonomy and ownership. You cannot have one without the other. The task, therefore, is in accepting responsibility and being accountable, that when things do not follow the plan you step up to the mark and start looking for solutions. More importantly, if you are stuck, ask for help!
Seeking help is not a sign of failure. It is a sign of strength. In fact it is why good leaders employ good people, because they know they do not on their own have all the answers.
So you do not have just your boss to ask for help. Being the leader of a team yourself means you do not have to know it all – ask the team for help. Now, you do not just have one brain working on the problem, you have a whole host of brains!
You would be amazed at the effect this can have on performance.
We all like being asked for help, why should your team be any different?
